What are Cable glands?
Cable Glands are connectors used to seal the ends of cables and fix them to various plugs, terminals, housings or electrical equipment. They protect sensitive wires from moisture, pollution, corrosion and even flammable gases.
Cable Glands are used for laying cables outdoors or in harsh environments, also for running cables through plating or bulkheads. Cable Glands are used for various types of power, data, control, instrumentation, automation and telecommunications cables.
How to install cable gland?
Cable Glands vary from one to another, but the basic principle of installation is as follows.
Before you start installing sealed cables:
Follow the manufacturer's guidelines and ensure that you comply with local practices
Turn off all electrical equipment and disconnect all live wires
Be careful not to damage loose wires during installation
Make sure your gland is fully compatible with the cable you plan to connect it to
Ensure that Cable Glands are free from contact with solvents, chemicals or dirt during installation
Installation:
First, open the Cable gland of Cable Glands and remove the nuts
Peel the outer sheath of Cable Glands to the length matching the joint size using suitable tools. Expose the internal metal armour, if any
Insert the right end of the gland into the cable and evenly lay the peeling sheath or armour around the gland
Reinstall the nut and tighten carefully using a wrench or similar tool to secure the gland in place
Some Cable Glands have two halves, designed to fit on either side of the enclosure, providing a waterproof sealing Cable. Installation of these glands involves drilling a hole in the wall of the shell and then securing each half of the gland into place.
How to install armoured Cable Glands?
To mount the gland to the armoured cable or SWA cable, you will need a good pair of wire cutters or hacksaws and two right-sized wrenches.
The fitting process is as follows:
First, unscrew the cable gland and slide the components onto the cable in the correct order
Strip a section of the outer insulation layer, as well as the inner and armour layers, and strip these backsides. The combination and length of the strip depends on the type of cable and gland you are using
Install the tapered cable gland underneath the internal insulation and armour layer. This may require some scattered cores. Make sure these are covered on the cone and do not enter it as this could cause damage to the internal insulation
Slide on the armour gripper ring
The armour lock nut is rotated back into the cone, thus forcing the armour clamp ring to join the cone and securing the wire into place
Tighten each Cable Glands section with a wrench. Seal back of gland with sealing nut. These compressed internal seals insulate the exterior, making Cable Glands waterproof.
