Types of Cable Glands

The cable gland is a device designed to connect and secure the end of a cable to equipment. The use of cable gland allows current to be supplied and distributed between cables without any hindrance.

Cable glands are used to terminate cables to electrical equipment or electrical enclosures. Cable glands must be installed on most electrical installations. The choice of cable gland type depends on many factors:

• Installation Type: Home, Commercial or Industrial

• Indoor or outdoor environment

• explosive atmosphere

• Corrosive atmosphere

• Cost

Cable glands are a "critical safety" device in the entire electrical system in a factory or installation. The importance of selecting and using the correct type of cable gland cannot be overlooked. There are various types of cable splices, from basic "A" type splices to composite barrier splices.

Types of Industrial Cable Glands

BS 6121 specifies the design and construction requirements for cable glands and gives the type designation of the glands.

Manufacturers of cable glands sometimes use the following names in their product codes. The basic names of the glands are as follows:

• Type A1. For unarmoured cables with an elastomer or plastic outer sheath, the function of the gland is to secure the outer sheath of the cable.

• Type A2. Same as Type A1 but with IP68 seal between outer sheath and gland.

• Type A3. Same as Type A1 but with electrical connections for metal inner sheath.

• Type A4. Same as Type A2 but with electrical connections for metal inner sheath.

• Type B. For armored or metal braided cables where the function of the gland is to secure the armor or metal braid and to provide electrical continuity between such armor or braid and the threaded securing parts of the gland.

• Type C. For armored or wire braided cables with elastic or plastic outer sheath. Same as Type B but with IP68 seal between outer jacket and gland.

• Type D1. For armored or wire braided cables with elastic or plastic outer sheath. Same as Type B, but with IP68 sealing between inner boot and threaded retaining assembly.

• Type D2. Same as Type D1, but with electrical connections for metal inner sheath.

• 
  

• Type E1. For armored or wire braided cables with extruded elastomer or plastic inner jacket and elastomer or plastic outer jacket. Same as Type C, but with IP68 sealing between inner jacket and gland and between inner jacket and threaded retaining assembly.

• Type E2. Same as type E1, but with electrical connections for metal inner sheath.

Types B, C, D1, E1 and E2 glands are suitable for either armored or wire braided protection types and a suffix should be added to the name to indicate the type of protection the gland is suitable for. The suffixes for each protection type are as follows.

• Monofilament armored W

• Flexible steel wire armored flexible T

• Wire Braid X

• Aluminum Tape Armor Y

• Double steel tape armored Z

• Cable gland type

• Cable gland type 'A'

Type "A" cable glands are often referred to as "filler" cable glands. There are two types of "A" cable glands. A1 and A2, A1 are attached to the cable, while the "A2" gland is sealed and attached to the cable.

• For unarmoured, plastic or rubber jacketed cables.

• Suitable for most indoor and outdoor applications.

Suitable for single wire armored, plastic or rubber jacketed cables.

Application - For use in dry indoor environments only.

Sealed to IP68

Suitable for most climates, weatherproof and waterproof.

Cable gland type 'E'

Suitable for the following cables:

Plastic or rubber sheath

Extruded or lapped laminar

Armored or Braided

Outer seal clamps cable jacket

The inner seal clamps the underlay of the cable

Internal and external sealing grade IP68

Suitable for most climates, weatherproof and waterproof.

Brass or stainless steel designs feature individual armored locking rings.
